Key to the theory is the Krakatoa signal. One of the first questions that the writers faced was just how could a volcano send a radio message? To this, they responded that the eruption flooded the atmosphere with a huge amount of volcanic ash. When entering into the atmosphere this caused a huge reaction, disturbing the ionosphere to the point where it caused the spontaneous creation of radio waves. So strong was the reaction that the waves exited out our galaxy and found their way to 61 Cygni. Even the selection of planet was justified; 61 Cygni is a binary star, one of only two stars that was known (in 1964) to possess an extra-solar planet. Though we now know that these kinds of planets can be fairly common, the Soviet writers were very deliberate in their selection. We also now know just how possible it can be to use lasers to communicate over huge interstellar distances.
